Excellent Resource. - Very clear and simple to use, unlike Carsons NT survey which is not so user friendly.

Old Testament commentaries - what s hot and what s not - Longman s Old Testament commentary is the sister to that provided on the New Testament by Don Carson. Longman reviews each commentary that has come out on the different Old Testament books. There is much that is extremely useful in Longman s survey. His comments are short and pithy, and reflect Longman s evangelical convictions. His sections at the back on buying an Old Testament Library on a Budget, The Ideal Old Testament Reference Library and Longman s Five Star Commentaries are especially useful. His star rating for each book makes the survey quick and easy to use.However, Longman s views are perhaps not quite as trustworthy as Carson s. He places great stall by acommentary being up with the latest scholarship, which does not necessarily help either the Christian looking for help with his or her Quiet Time or the minister seeking to understand a Bible passage for the purposes of a sermon or bible study. Nor does Longman always look for a Christological approach to the Old Testament and fails to recognise those who do (such as Dale Ralph Davis for instance). So his survey is worthing having and worth using, but with caution. His survey can be a helpful starting point when searching for commentaries, without being as authoritative as Carson s fine New Testament survey.
